Cape Town -- culinary anchor of all South Africa, eclipsing even capital Johannesburg -- yields an extensive line-up of restaurants unrivaled anywhere else in the country. Sun-splashed hotels along Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred waterfront provide ultime civilized options for refreshment, from the Table Bay Hotel’s award-winning Atlantic Grill to the Cape Grace’s Bascule bar and wine cellar at the water’s edge with more than 420 whiskies. At the foot of Table Mountain, the venerable Mount Nelson -- a pink icon known affectionately as The Nellie -- is a magnet for both fine evening dining and afternoon tea. Willoughby & Co. is reknowned for seafood in the Victoria Wharf shopping center, as is the Bala Seafood Restaurant. Also along the waterfront is Jack’s, celebrated for lobster. Kloof Street is lined with dining options including the bistro-style Café Gainsborough and ethnic eateries like Saigon and Yindees. Constantia wine farms produce excellent reds and whites and restaurants of note include Constantia Uitsig, Groot Constantia, Steenberg and Buitenverwachting, (the latter meaning beyond expectation), serving venison and Cape line fish such as kingklip. Northeast of Cape Town is the Paarl region where Bosman’s is famed for three-course lunches, five-course dinners and award-winning wines. 96 Winery Road Restaurant, just outside Stellenbosch, showcases fresh local ingredients. Among several fine restaurants in the village of Franschboek, Le Quartier Francais Restaurant provides creative country ambiance and an extensive wine selection. On the Cape West Coast, Hilda’s Kitchen in Darling, within an 1808 homestead, serves patrons either in the kitchen or in its courtyard.
